KendraBLOGS is my second blog. I actually started my first blog, Adjusting to Adulthood, back in 2016. It is a blog about personal growth and development in adulthood. In the first 1.5 years after starting that blog, I didn’t focus largely on monetizing it, but I was bringing in a small inconsistent income through affiliate links and a downloadable work book.
If I’m being honest with you though, I had absolutely no blog income strategy. I was basically winging it and hoping for the best.
Then, in 2018, I decided to start taking my blog more serious and actually focus on creating a consistent monthly blog income.
From January 1st 2018 to date (July 2018) I was able to bring in approximately $1102.00 from my Adjusting to Adulthood blog, and that is continuing to grow monthly. Actually $467 of that total is from the past two months alone.
So, what did I change to see results?
Well, I simply started to think more strategically about the ways I could monetize that blog.
You see, different types of monetization strategies work better depending on your blog niche or topic. For example, on kendraBLOGS, affiliate marketing has been really beneficial in bringing in a blog income for me. But, the reason for that is because I blog about blogging, and there are a ton of blogging tools and resources that I can mention and recommend within my posts and to my readers. Because of that, I have been able to bring in about $516.00 in affiliate income within 2.5 months of starting a brand new blog.

But, with Adjusting to Adulthood, affiliate marketing just isn’t my focus because there just isn’t enough opportunity for it within that blog. I still use affiliate links, for example I have a post about Great Books to Read for Personal Growth, and I include amazon affiliate links in there, but affiliate marketing makes up a small portion of that blogs income. With that blog, digital downloads make up almost all of my blog income. Once I realized that is where I should focus my efforts on this particular blog, I started to see results.
I created two downloadable products:
- The Thrive Guide – A Self-improvement guide & workbook ($59)
- A Self Confidence Workbook ($7)
Now, something that may be surprising to you is the fact that my $7 product actually brings me the most profit. It is only a $7 digital download but it has made me almost $300 since launching it in May, and currently converts at about 46% which is amazing!
Because it is a tripwire product.
You see, I had created a free e-course as an opt-in for my email list and it was doing really well. I was getting a ton of opt-ins every day through this free course. If your interested, the e-course is called “See Ya Later Self Doubt”, and it all about letting go of fear of failure, and gaining more self-confidence! I had a ton of people signing up for the e-course, and I knew I could use it to my advantage somehow through a sales funnel or pitching them something, but I just didn’t know how!
That was when I came across a blog post all about using a tripwire. I knew instantly that is exactly what I needed to pair with my free course.
So, what the heck is a tripwire?
Basically, a tripwire is an extremely discounted offer that is given after someone opts-in for one of your freebies. You simply set it up so that when a reader opts-in to a freebie, they are redirected to the sales page of your trip wire. The offer is usually a one-time-offer that can only be accessed through being redirected to that page or is a time sensitive offer that is only available for a very limited time (think like 10 – 30 minutes)
So why exactly are tripwires so effective?
They are so effective because they are all about creating a feeling of urgency. Urgency is proven to help increase conversion rates because the person does not want to miss out on the deal!
If you are launching and selling products, but you aren’t giving the potential customer a reason to buy now, chances are that they will wait, and then maybe come back later and buy. But, with a tripwire, they have to choose in that moment or they will miss out on the opportunity. Plus when you pair that with an irresistible offer, what is there to think about?
Your trip wire should be something that is the potential customer wouldn’t want to miss out on it. Tap into that FOMO that you know we all have, am I right?
What exactly do I mean by an irresistible offer? It can be any and/or all of these options:
- It is something that is not available anywhere else on your blog. If they want the product this is literally the only way to get it. It isn’t offered anywhere else.
- You offer a HUGE discount – Usually, a tripwire is a product that is either inexpensive or heavily discounted. Most tripwires are at least 50% off. So if something is regularly $25 and you are offering it for $7, chances are people will jump on that deal.
How to Create a Tripwire Product that is Effective and Irresistible
Okay, so while tripwires are great, the first step is actually creating a FREE opt-in that is even better. You need something that will draw people in. It obviously needs to be relevant to whatever topic you blog about as well, because these are people that will be signing up for your email list. Your freebie can be an ebook, email course, checklist, or whatever you would like.

Next, your trip wire NEEDS to be relevant to your freebie offer. For example, the tripwire I offer when someone opts into my “See Ya Later Self Doubt” course is a self-confidence workbook. I know the people signing up for the free e-course are wanting to improve their self-confidence because that is what the course is all about, so offering them a downloadable workbook compliments the free course they just signed up for!
Last, you need to create a strategic sales page where your reader will be directed to when they opt-in to your freebie. As soon as they hit submit on the opt-in page, they should be instantly redirected to your tripwire sales page.
The sales page should be short and describe what is included + the main benefits as well as a preview of what they will get when they purchase. If you are using the timed method, then you should include a countdown timer that explains that they have x amount of time to get a mega discount. This creates that sense of urgency that will give your reader the push to make the purchase so they do not miss out on the sale.
I personally use Leadpages to create my landing pages and sale pages. Leadpages has a countdown timer option that you can include on your page.
One thing I will also add, is that if you decide to use the limited time sale price, that you should be honest about the real price vs. the sale price. Don’t say your product is worth $50 but marked down to $9 if you wouldn’t actually sell that product for $50 regularly.
For example, I do not offer my tripwire anywhere else on my website. It is only available when someone opts in to my free course and is redirected to the sales page. So, to price my product, I had to decide what I would have sold the workbook at if it wasn’t a trip wire and was just for sale on my blog. I have it regularly priced at $22 because I believe that is all I would charge if I was selling it on my blog. But, because it is a tripwire, I have it marked down at 70% off.
Basically don’t pretend your product is actually worth more just to make the sale seem amazing. Your readers will see through it and you will lose their trust.
How to Deliver Your Tripwire to the Customer
There are actually multiple ways you can send your product to a customer once they purchase, It will simply depend on your tripwire and what you need:
- Use a tool like SendOwl to complete the purchase and deliver the digital product directly to their inbox. I use SendOwl and it is super easy to use and has given me great results.
- If your tripwire is an online course you can use a platform like Teachable and simply give the customer access to the course when they purchase.
- Or you can simply set up an automation through your email marketing platform (I use ConvertKit) so when the purchase is made they are sent an email with instructions on how to access or download the product. (This option would require you to have another platform where you accept payments that can also integrate with your email service provider. Stripe or Paypal are great options.)
The Power of a Tripwire:
So, you may be thinking, seesh! That sounds like an awful lot of work for such a small price tag. Well, besides the fact that the small price tag can really add up fast if you have an awesome opt-in offer, a tripwire has one other magic power to help you make even more money!
Once someone purchases your tripwire offer, you can actually “upsell” them through an email sales funnel. What I mean by that is that you can create another, more expensive offer, that provides even more value.
This could be a paid course, more expensive physical product, a coaching program or even a service you offer! Now typically, by taking this approach, the more expensive offer will convert better after someone first purchases your tripwire offer, rather than if you had jumped straight to the more expensive offer.
Because it is all about the mindset. A person is more likely to purchase a $7 limited time offer from you over a $150 coaching session from you. But, when someone purchases something from you, even if it is only a $7 tripwire product, their mindset shifts from expecting only free things from you to becoming a customer. By them purchasing that cheaper product first, they are able to see the type of value you can provide, and now trust in your expertise. This results in them being more likely to purchase a more expensive product from you!
Makes sense right?
So, as you can see a little tripwire product can provide BIG results!
