Creating a blog is a great opportunity to create a side income for yourself, or even potentially turn that side income into a full-time income. Many bloggers I know of were able to ditch their 9-5 and start blogging full-time making more than they did at their day jobs! And, many more bloggers I know of make at least a side income from their blogging hobby! Pretty cool right?
So why is blogging such a great side hustle / business opportunity? Well there are quite a few reasons actually! But today I am just going to touch on the 7 biggest ones. These are the 7 reasons I believe starting a blog is an amazing side hustle or small business opportunity!
1 | It is Easy & Cheap
Compared to any other small business options, blogging is quite cheap in comparison. To start a completely Self Hosted WordPress blog, you are looking at about $71 + your domain name ($15). What other business can you start in a half hour for less than $100?
Plus you will most likely make back that $100 within a few months, or possibly less! I made back my initial investment in this blog in my very first month after launching. You can read more about it here: Blog Income Report: April + May 2018
And yes, I said you can start a blog in a half hour (probably less).
I actually have a whole step by step tutorial that walks you through the whole process right here: How to Start A Blog: A Step by Step Beginners Guide
2 | Great ROI
So, as I briefly mentioned above the return on investment is pretty huge when it comes to starting a blog. At the VERY least you will make back the cost of your hosting + domain. But, chances are, you will make back that and quite a bit more.
I was able to create a profit from each of my two blogs. The first one it took a little while, because if I am being honest I just didn’t take it seriously at first. But my second blog (this one) I was able to generate a blog income within the first two months of launching.
I took my second blog seriously, I had a plan and strategy, and it paid off big time.
Below are some great examples of bloggers who are KILLIN it! (They have clearly made back their original investment) Some are even making over $10,000 per month!
+ Chelsea from HerPaperRoute.com makes over $10,000 per month – See her latest income report here.
+ Michelle from MakingSenseofCents.com made $113,235 in July – See that income report here. Michelle also has an amazing course that really helped me step up my Affiliate Marketing strategy and start earning money with affiliate links. I highly recommend checking it out if you are interesting in using Affiliate Marketing as an Income Stream. Click here for all the details
+ Taylor from TaylorStanford.com made $3,415 in July 2018 – See her income report by Clicking right here.
3 | No Education or Skill Required
A big worry that aspiring bloggers have is the lack of experience with website design, marketing skills, or knowing any of the super technical stuff like code, etc.
Honestly, that is nothing to worry about! So many bloggers, probably most of them, are self-taught. I had absolutely no experience with any website related knowledge prior to starting my blog.
Everything I do on my blog is completely self-taught or learned through taking courses created by other bloggers. I don’t know anything about code, and I have been blogging for almost three years. If you use a theme that allows customization, you really don’t need to know code. There is also amazing Page Builder plugins you can download to make front-end design a breeze!
Obviously if you are starting a blog about website design than, yes, you should know a thing or two about graphic design and website creation. But if you are wanting to start an online business centered around fitness, and the only thing stopping you is lack of blogging knowledge, my advice to you is jump on Pinterest and find a great tutorial for starting your own Self Hosted Blog (or find my super simple tutorial here: How to Start A Blog: A Step by Step Beginners Guide ).
Once you get set up, everything you will ever need can be found offered for free by another blogger. A simple search in Pinterest will yield the results you are looking for, I promise!
Still feeling unsure? I also offer a FREE blogging course that walks you through starting your blog, designing your blog, getting traffic, building a community through email marketing, and I even talk about how to make money from your blog!
4 | Flexibility + Freedom
Another great aspect of blogging is the fact that you can literally blog from anywhere that has an internet connection. You can make money while you travel the world by becoming a travel blogger. You can make money and stay home with your baby by blogging about parenthood. Still work your 9-5, no worries, you can blog around your schedule and figure out what works for you. Even dedicating a few hours a week to your blog can bring you in a nice little side income!
The whole reason I decided to start taking my blog seriously is because I want to stay home with my daughter full-time. I am also the type of person who would LOVE working from home, and hates the typical 9-5 grind. I have been able to move down to a part-time role thanks to the additional money I make from my blog. My goal is to be able to quit my job completely and blog full-time. I want the flexibility to work when I want to and be able to spend time with my daughter and partner without feeling exhausted from my 9-5 + commute every single day.
5 | You Get What You Give
In the blogging world, you really get back what you put in. If you start a blog, and put in little effort, write one blog post every few months, and don’t try and build a loyal community, chances are, you will never make any income from that blog.
BUT, if you start your blog, post quality content consistently, work to build a community and grow your traffic, create a strategy to bring in an income, and execute that strategy, you have a very high chance of earning an income from your blog.
If you put in the hard work and effort, you will see the results!
6 | Customers Are Only a Click Away
The best part about starting a blogging biz or side hustle is that your ideal audience is literally a click away. By utilizing Pinterest, Social Media, and email marketing, you can bring thousands and thousands of eyes to your blog every single month. If you are strategic, those thousands and thousands of eyes are being prompted with sales or lead capture pages, signing up to your email list and being placed in sales funnels, clicking your affiliate links, viewing your ads, enrolling in your courses, etc.
Not many small startup businesses can generate thousands of potential customers within their first few months of launching. The potential you have to get your blog (and your products, courses, affiliate links, ads) in front of people is HUGE. That is why so many bloggers are now making money within their first 6 months of starting their blogs.
If you have a strategy and plan in place to bring in traffic and build your community, you can 100% start earning a decent side income from your blog in your first few months!
7 | The Income Stream Variety
The thing I love most about making money with my blog, is that fact that there are so many different ways to do it! Depending on your niche, your own personal preference, and what will work best for your audience, you can pick from a variety of different income streams.
You can create digital downloads, ebooks, courses, products, etc. You can use affiliate marketing and promote products you love in exchange for a small commission. You can work with brands and write sponsored posts. You can use ads throughout your blog. Or you can even sell services through your blog, such as web design, meal planning, coaching services, etc.
Those are just a few examples or how you can earn an income with your blog, and what I usually recommend is that bloggers try more than one income stream to generate an income so they can figure out which works best for their audience and for themselves.
Okay, so those are my 7 big reasons why blogging is a great option for a side hustle of business. There are many bloggers who started their blogs as a hobby or to make some additional income, and who have turned their blogs into a full time income. If you are passionate about something, and feel you have knowledge to share with others, then blogging may be a great option for you!
